I shouldn’t be outside without a shirt or a way to defend myself.

I know it even as I open the door, but I’m still just buzzed enough from the alcohol and Lenny’s sweet, glorious mouth that I don’t stop to think it over.

Waves lap at the shoreline behind the beach house, each crash of water into sand louder than the last. Aside from that, I don’t hear anything else.

Don’t see anything, despite the obnoxious sound of something hitting the window just moments ago. No one’s in the immediate vicinity, and as I stalk around the perimeter of the property, I come up empty.

And much more paranoid.

Heading back inside, I pause with my hand on the doorknob, glancing down at the far end of the porch. Something dark catches my eye as it contrasts with the light wood, and I walk over, bending down to inspect.

A flashlight.

Suspicion weaves through my stomach as I look around once more, scanning the beach for even the slightest sign of life. The breeze picks up, whispering across my bare skin and setting my nerves on edge.

In my line of work, I’ve seen a multitude of unwelcome visitors over the years. People who track me down with the intent of seeking justice for those they’ve lost at my hand.

Aside from the Andersons and mine and Lenny’s brothers, though, no one knows we’re out here. At least, they shouldn’t know, but the fact that someone’s clearly been around has murderous rage coursing through my nervous system.

Careful to only grab the handle, I pinch the light between two fingers and stand up, taking it inside. Lenny’s standing just beyond the threshold, clutching the lapels of her robe to her neck.

“Did you find something?” she rushes out, hurrying to my side.

I walk into the kitchen and set the flashlight on the counter. She looks at it, then up at me, green eyes narrowed.

“What’s that?”

“Certainly, you’ve seen a flashlight before.”

Her expression flattens. “I mean, where did it come from? Is it yours?”

“No, Lenny, I don’t typically leave my belongings unattended.” Starting down the hall with the light, I swipe my shirt from the floor and pull it on, heading for the front door.

“Wait, where are you going?”

“To figure out who’s been traipsing around my bloody property.”

Lenny shifts, toying with the tie of her robe. “Do you… so, you think someone’s out there?”

“Hence the swift departure.”

“And you’re just gonna leave me here?”

My hand tightens around the knob. “You’re plenty safe in the house, I can assure you.”

Rubbing her arms, Lenny fiddles with a strand of hair. “What if I’m not? What if someone breaks in while you’re gone, even though you have those weird bars on the windows, and I can’t escape?”

“Because of the bars.”

She nods, glancing down at her toes as they curl into the floor. I watch her for several beats, noting the rapid rise and fall of her chest, as well as the soft, vulnerable expression on her face, and a strange feeling wells up inside me.

Like I’ve been raked over hot coals and left to tend to the wounds on my own.
